The USB Bottleneck

USB packages audio data, clocks, and power into complex, asynchronous "packets" sent over a single data line. Inside your DAC, a USB receiver (like an XMOS chip) must catch these packets, unpack them, reconstruct the timing clock, and repackage them. This heavy processing generates high-frequency electrical noise and introduces timing errors (jitter).

The I²S Highway

I²S is the native mother tongue of DAC chips (like ESS or AKM). It sends the audio Data, Bit Clock (BCK), Word Clock (LRCK), and Master Clock (MCLK) on completely separate, dedicated physical wires. There is no packaging, no unpacking, and zero processing delay. It is a direct hardware-to-hardware pipeline.

The HDMI Connector Myth: Why use an HDMI cable for I²S? Because I²S requires multiple parallel wires carrying high-speed signals. A standard HDMI cable contains 19 heavily shielded twisted-pair wires perfectly suited for Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS).

Crucial Warning: An I²S HDMI port does NOT output video or standard HDMI audio. Never plug an I²S HDMI output into a TV, Soundbar, or standard AV Receiver, as the voltage differences can damage your equipment.

The Pinout Wild West: PS Audio vs. Gustard

Unlike USB, I²S over HDMI has no official international standard. Different manufacturers wire the pins differently. If the pinout of your source (DDC/Streamer) doesn't match your DAC, you will experience inverted phases, missing channels, or absolute silence. I²S MODE (Pinout Selection)

NORMAL / MODE1: Aligns with the PS Audio standard. Use this if your source is an SMSL digital interface, Denafrips, or Holo Audio.
REVERSED / MODE2: Aligns with the Gustard standard. This literally flips the +/- polarity of the DATA and LRCLK pins. If your music sounds hollow, lacking bass, or spatially "wrong", switch to this mode to fix the phase inversion.

I²S DSD CHANNEL (Fixing Left/Right Swaps)

Because DSD sends left and right channel data differently than PCM, some source devices will play DSD with the Left and Right channels swapped.
Change DSDL=PCM DATA to DSDL=PCM LRCK to instantly swap the channels back to normal. Note: This setting only affects native DSD playback over the I²S input.

I²S MCLK (Master Clock Frequency)

Found on flagship models like the VMV D3R. The default is 1024fs (45.1584MHz / 49.152MHz). If your source interface (DDC) only supports 512fs output, switch this setting to 512fs to establish a successful clock lock.
