Software Setup: Achieving Bit-Perfect

1. TIDAL Desktop App

Tidal makes bit-perfect playback and MQA passthrough incredibly simple with its built-in Exclusive Mode.

To hear browser sounds again, simply pause your Tidal/Qobuz track.

Do I need to leave my Windows volume at 100%? +

Yes. If you are not using Exclusive mode, lowering the volume via the Windows slider reduces digital bit-depth, effectively destroying dynamic range. Always leave Windows software volume at 100% and control your listening volume using the physical knob on your SMSL DAC or amplifier.

What about Mac users? Do I need ASIO? +

No. MacOS uses a framework called Core Audio, which natively supports automatic sample rate switching and bit-perfect output without the need for ASIO drivers. On a Mac, simply select your DAC in the Tidal/Qobuz settings and check "Exclusive Mode"—Core Audio will handle the rest flawlessly. (Note: MacOS supports DSD via DoP, but not Native DSD).

What is the difference between DoP and Native DSD? +

DoP (DSD over PCM) packages DSD data into a PCM container to trick the OS into transmitting it, unfolding it back into DSD inside the DAC. It is mathematically identical and lossless, but usually limited to DSD256 due to bandwidth.
